Throughout the week, children at Haddenham St Mary's CE School explored 'festivals of light' from around the world, discovering how different cultures and religions mark special times of hope, peace, and new beginnings.

They learned about celebrations from a variety of world calendars, such as Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas, Chinese New Year, and Eid.

The children were fascinated to find out how light is used as a symbol of goodness, unity, and faith across so many traditions. As part of this learning journey, our pupils took part in an exciting project for primary schools in partnership with the organisers of the Aylesbury Festival of Light.

Every child designed and created their own beautiful lantern, carefully crafting it during the week and learning about the significance of lanterns in different cultures. Some are featured in one of the photographs.

The week culminated in our own “Festival of Light” celebration at school. Families, staff, and friends gathered together for an evening filled with colour, sound, and community spirit. There was a delicious cultural food buffet with dishes representing many parts of the world, traditional dance workshops, henna painting, temporary tattoos, and cultural crafts.

Children and families enjoyed toasting marshmallows around the fire and sharing stories about the week’s learning. The highlight of the evening was the lantern parade. As dusk fell, every child proudly carried their handmade lantern, lighting up the school with a warm and joyful glow. It was a magical moment that truly reflected the message of our theme Let There Be Light, celebrating diversity, togetherness, and the light we can all share with one another.

The Editor is indebted to Carol Mason for kindly capturing photographs of the event.
