Housebuilder offers apprenticeships for Buckinghamshire students

Redrow has announced new opportunities available to students across Buckinghamshire ahead of National Apprenticeship Week.

The Redrow South Midlands apprenticeship scheme will see successful candidates work at popular developments across the region, including The Maltings in Haddenham, Pilgrims Chase in Harlington, Woburn View in Milton Keynes, and Leestone Chase in Leighton Buzzard.

The apprenticeships will enable students with a passion for construction to develop their vocational skills and focus on different aspects of housebuilding, including bricklaying and carpentry. With a current shortage of construction and trade skills in the UK, Redrow is reinforcing its commitment to investing in the workforce of the future.

Andrew Newman, Head of Sales at Redrow South Midlands, said: “As part of our commitment to developing and inspiring the next generation of housebuilders, we’re proud to offer apprenticeship opportunities across Buckinghamshire for school leavers who aspire to build a career in construction.

“Our aim is to give motivated learners the chance to expand their industry knowledge and gain practical, hands-on experience, equipping them with the tools and support they need to succeed in their chosen field.

“At Redrow South Midlands, we have welcomed 71 apprentices since 2019, who have graduated with the skills and confidence to pursue successful careers, and we hope to inspire many more. For any school leaver considering an apprenticeship and eager to build a future in the industry, I would strongly encourage them to apply for our programme.”

Among this year's cohort is 28-year-old Sheldon Cooper, who is working towards completing a bricklaying apprenticeship at popular Haddenham development, The Maltings.

Sharing what inspired him to apply, Sheldon said: “I started working on a construction site during the Covid lockdown and quickly realised I enjoyed teamwork, being outdoors and the sense of achievement seeing a completed project. From there, I knew I wanted to build a long-term career in the construction industry.

“Redrow has an excellent reputation and offers a well-regarded training programme. The apprenticeship was a valuable opportunity to earn a recognised qualification with a leading housebuilder.

“With this in mind, I immediately knew I had to apply as I liked the hands-on nature of the work and being able to see what I’d achieved at the end of each day. I love the idea of knowing I’m building something tangible that will impact people’s lives for years to come. Seeing all of the different trades come together with the shared goal of building incredible houses is amazing, and something I am proud to be part of.”

Sheldon is four months into his apprenticeship and shared what a typical day looks like.

“Each day I work alongside experienced bricklayers, help prepare materials, learn new techniques and improve my skills while working safely on site,” he said.

“Key responsibilities include learning the bricklaying trade on site and continuously developing my skills through hands-on training and college studies.”

Sheldon’s words of advice for young people thinking about a Redrow apprenticeship are: “If you enjoy practical work, go for it. You earn, learn and gain valuable experience with a company that supports you every step of the way.

“The training and on-site experience are helping me build a solid career. To get you started, Redrow provides the required tool bundles. Travel and accommodation are also provided, taking the stress away from commuting
and making attending college easy and enjoyable.

“In five years, I see myself fully qualified, more experienced and continuing to grow within the industry.”
