This is 'Acupuncture Awareness Week', and local therapist Jill Marson Smith offers the following insight into this ancient form of complementary medicine

I am an acupuncturist, qualified in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Five Element Acupuncture, working at the Haddenham Medical Centre.

Good health and a sense of wellbeing are the foundations to keep us active and full of energy, whatever our age; but all too often, a hectic lifestyle, illness or injury, affects our vitality and changes our daily lives. So if you are looking for a way to improve your health and wellbeing, acupuncture may be able to help you.

Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system based on principles, that use the body's natural tendency towards equilibrium. It looks at pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance.

What makes this system so uniquely suited to modern life is that physical, emotional and mental are seen as interdependent, and reflect what many people perceive as the connection between the different aspects their lives.

What can acupuncture treat?
According to the British Acupuncture Council, acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages including babies, children and the elderly. It can be very effective on its own and is also often integrated with conventional medical treatment.

Traditional acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of symptoms resulting from illness and clearly defined complaints, as well as improving general wellbeing and promoting relaxation.

A growing body of evidence-based clinical research shows that traditional acupuncture, as practised by British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) members, safely treats a wide range of common health problems including short-term relief of symptoms such as low back pain, tension-type headaches and migraine-type headaches. Acupuncture can also help temporarily relieve pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee, together with exercise and conventional medicine.
