The Haddenham Community Vehicle committee and trustees recently held a special "crisis meeting". They released the following statement:
"Carrie, the Haddenham Community Vehicle (HCV) is struggling! Unless we can recruit more volunteer drivers, the service to the community will have to stop.
The HCV service is in its tenth year and has gone from strength to strength, with much praise from all those we help. We currently have over 50 clients needing help as necessary, but our small team of volunteer drivers has to grow if we are to survive. We are already having to turn down client requests."
Carrie provides personal transport, very often to medical appointments, for those with mobility issues which prevent them from using public transport or conventional cars. Serving Haddenham and all surrounding villages, door-to-door journeys may be up to 20 miles, bookable in advance.
The committee is desperate to sign up new drivers. They will arrange and pay for driver DBS clearance and undertake a couple of hours practical training with Carrie and the wheelchair. A few more people, providing just two or three trips per month would make a vast difference.
The reward for being a volunteer driver in the team is simply the satisfaction of helping make a massive contribution to the community and enhancing the lives of others. After nine years building up this local service, helping hundreds of those less able, it would be tragic for this village and our residents if this service were to fail.
