Report on HHS Autumn Show 5th September 2026
As is increasingly the case, we approached Show day with considerable uncertainty, wondering what effect our changing weather pattern would have on the number of entries and on the quality of those entries, particularly in the vegetable and flower classes. However, once more we need not have worried too much, as the entries in those two sections were about the same, with some classes actually attracting more entries than last year. Sadly, though, the fruit clearly had been affected by the weather, causing things to ripen unseasonably early and also not to reach their full potential.
As ever, across the wide range of other classes some proved more popular and others less so than last year, and overall the number of exhibitors was a little down, although we were very pleased to welcome a number of first-time entrants alongside our more regular exhibitors, at least one of whom was successful in winning a trophy.
The special prize given by Haddenham Rotary Club for the best exhibit in the children’s section was presented by Pauline Dichler, the current Club President, to Phoebe Cleave, for a model made of recycled material; her model was of an alien in a circular spacecraft. The other trophies were presented by our President, David Chalk.
The number of visitors was very similar to last year and we received many favourable comments about the Show itself, from several of the judges as well as from the visitors. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves as always, with the wide range of classes providing something of interest for all. There were the usual refreshments, raffle and tombola, all of which generated a little more income than last year. However, the weather meant that the small plant sale we run was reduced to virtually nothing.
As we do every year, we will review the schedule over the next few months to see if any changes might prove beneficial, and we are always open to receiving suggestions from outside the committee.
Finally, as every year we would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped setting up in advance and on Show day, who play no small part in making the Show the success that it is, and indeed without whom we would not be able to function. Also, very many thanks to all those who supported us by very kindly donating raffle and tombola prizes, entering the show classes or simply by coming along on the day.
