What's this all about ?

We already recycle as much as we can through our blue bins – but we are still throwing away a lot of stuff that cannot be put in those bins, but could actually be recycled. By throwing it in the waste bin it all goes to incineration (the beast) – 900 tonnes of it a day at Greatmoor EFW.

We can kid ourselves that 'EFW' stands for Energy From Waste – and that producing electricity in this way is a good thing. But did you know that ...

Incineration will be the dirtiest form of electricity production once the last coal fired power stations are phased out in a couple of years

and

Plastic is created from petrochemicals and so is simply fossil fuel in solid form!

Buckinghamshire and, indeed, Haddenham declared a climate emergency in 2019, but we are not reducing emissions fast enough.

So please join me on this challenge, to collect the following items which cannot be put into blue bins:

  • soft plastic
  • plastic toothbrushes
  • toothpaste tubes
  • soft contact lens packaging

Together, let's see how much we can stop going to the beast (the incinerator).

From 5th Feb to 5th March. I will collect your soft plastic, plastic toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, soft contact lens packaging, weigh it, send it to be recycled & let you know how much we saved from incineration.

Please do keep putting 'usual' recycling material in your blue bins though !

Four Easy Steps to Get Involved

1. On Saturday 5th February – pop in to see me at the Village Hall, Haddenham
I will be there on the same date/location as the Repair Café & Vale Harvest (from 9.00am – 12.00noon).

2. Sign up so that I know where to collect from and get a raffle ticket.

3. Start collecting soft plastics, soft contact lens packaging, plastic toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes. Unsure about soft plastics ? don't worry, I have an easy tip for you on 5th Feb !!

4. On Saturday 5th March – come back to the Village Hall (with your rubbish if I haven't already collected the last bits) to see if you have won the raffle (the winner gets 6 bottles of wine) and to chat about the next stage of the challenge.

And if you can't visit me at the Repair Café space, but you want to join in, just let me know by Email: fishville54@gmail.com and I'll sort it !

Thank you and I hope to see you on 5th February.
