witchert chorale in berlin

The Haddenham-based Witchert Chorale had a rather wonderful time recently as 11 choir members made the journey to Berlin to meet with our long time friends Golgatha Kantorei. This was our fourth trip to Berlin and we have been linked to the choir for the last 12 years.

This time we were extremely privileged to be part of a concert in the Herz Jesu Kirche. The 19th-century church was vast and breathtaking, with intricate religious artwork, towering dome, and glowing golden altar. We rehearsed in the afternoon along with fantastic soloists and instrumentalists. In the concert in the evening we sang Mozart's Vesperae solennes de Confessore all together, and we also sang several English and German pieces on our own, to a large and appreciative audience.

We enjoyed the vibrant city of Berlin, including the Festival of Lights and the fantastic hospitality of our hosts with so much wonderful food, wine and beer provided for us by the ever lovely German choir members. Although it was over all too quickly, the weekend had been something very special--a wonderful mix of music, friendship, and culture. And one thing was clear: we'd do it all again in a heartbeat. (We look forward to welcoming the German choir to visit us again in 2026.)

If you couldn't make it Berlin this weekend, the Witchert Chorale will soon be performing in St Mary's Haddenham to mark our 20th Anniversary. Our concert will be on Saturday 30 November at 7.30pm. For one night only, Ed Cairns will be back with us to perform his new spooky story "The Haddenham Phantom" written for the occasion, which will be interspersed with some of the Witchert Chorale's favourite choral pieces, old and new, including works by Brahms, Fauré, Cole Porter and Ola Gjeilo.

To enjoy this extraordinary evening with us please purchase tickets from our box office now via our website www.witchert.org.uk or phone Ann on 07876 683990 to reserve. All proceeds will go to Friends of St Mary's (Haddenham) and the Haddenham Village Society.
