To correspond with World Book Day on Thursday 5th March, Haddenham St Mary’s School held the official re-opening of its beautifully refurbished library.
The PTA raised a whopping £4,000 to refurbish the school library and create a calm inspiring space for the children.
Named after the late Mrs Woods and opened by her son, Andrew, it's a special addition to the school. The Woods family have also made a very kind donation of £2,500 to the school, which will go towards supporting reading and the upkeep of the library.
A huge thank you to everyone involved!
Three generations of Pauline’s family were in attendance, several of whom were attired in their jim-jams to match all the school staff and pupils on World Book Day. (Haddenham St Mary’s encourages children to wear the pyjamas rather than arrive in book character costumes to celebrate the day while creating a more consistent and more readily achievable approach).
As seen in the photos, the library is called “The Reading Woods” and has a delightful woodland theme, complete with a book tree and wall hooks crafted from real tree branches.
World Book Day is a celebration of books, to encourage children to develop a love of reading by promoting the activity as a fun and enjoyable part of life. Youngsters are more likely to read if they see it as a fun, entertaining and social thing to do. Research suggests that children who are regular readers grow up to be happier and academically more successful – a principle that the late Pauline Woods would have heartily supported.
